Taking The First Steps To Enhancing Your Wellbeing

Congratulations!

You have made the first tentative step in enhancing your wellbeing; you have acknowledged that something is not quite right and you’re here, looking for ways to help. But you might still be a bit unsure. Below are a number of questions that we’re often initially asked that you might find helpful.

What is CBT?

(cognitive behavioural therapy)Therapists work on the theory that we can all improve our mood and symptoms if we update what we think and what we do. The therapist will teach you techniques to facilitate this.

Are the techniques mechanical and one-size-fits-all?

Definitely not. While the therapist has been trained on many therapeutic techniques it will be tailored to each individual client.

Do I need to be psychologically minded?

No. Therapy is a collaborative relationship. You bring a vast amount of knowledge and experience and the therapist brings their expertise and together you work on overcoming problems together.

What if I feel awkward and uncomfortable?

This is common, but the therapist will make you feel at ease. They will offer you a safe, confidential and respectful environment where you will feel listened to, supported and empowered.

Does needing therapy mean I’m going mad?

Not at all. Everyone feels down, anxious or stressed at some point in their life. It becomes a problem when this overshadows other positive things in your life. The therapist will teach you techniques so that things are more in perspective.

Does it really work?

Yes, it does. There has been a vast amount of research to show that CBT can help a large number of people and with different problems. And the therapists here at Oxford CBT have found that it has significantly helped their clients.

Is it worth it?

Yes, it definitely is. Many people put in time, effort and money to care and nurture their physical health by joining to the gym, taking exercise classes etc. We all spend money on food for our body so that it functions. But have you put enough care into your mental health and wellbeing?
